I have been entering photography contests for a few years now. This is for personal growth and also allows me to feed my competitive nature. My photos have been chosen a few times for being in the Top 30 in a certain category but I have yet to win a big contest. Every time one of my photographs is chosen, I show my family and they get very excited along with me. This also helps to get them to be more cooperative when I am taking photographs of them by saying, “this photo might win in a contest!”
These five photographs are my favourites of the year for the category “Beautiful Light”. All of these photos were taken in Maui this year. It was amazing light and it helps to have golden hour at 6pm. Golden hour in our summer months are 9pm which can be a little late for capturing little ones playing and having energy.
This first one is of Oliver trying to long jump in the sand. Look at the flying sand behind him.
It is sometimes powerful to include very little into a photograph. Below is a simple shot of Emmett playing in the water, happy in his own world. Look at the curves of the water along the beach.
This photograph of Emmett is one of my favourites because if looks like he is surfing. The sun peaking out behind him creates a beautiful hazy glow. The sun will set in a few minutes and I have to work fast to capture these beach photos before the sun goes below the horizon.
Getting my three boys in the same frame is more difficult than it looks. I love that this photograph is light enough that I can see the emotion on Casey’s face. I have no idea what is happening that is making him look this way, but I have a feeling that he is being silly and weird. The haze on him from the sun creates a dreamy effect. The foamy water adds an extra element to this photograph.
Joy of a Boy
I just love the feeling when I look at this photograph of Emmett. He was twirling and spinning and in his own world. His body is relaxed and I was able to capture his beautiful profile. Its the tiny details like his little fingers that also make me love this photo.
